What comprises relationships, how abuse begins and why the cycle of violence is difficult to stop are questions on psychiatric dynamics that can be answered by a behavior model researched by forensic psychiatrist Gary Maier.
Maier called his behavior model Linear Aggression Sequence. He considers as unfair the pervading assumption that in abusive relationships, women are always the sole victims. Statistical findings back his claim that both men and women are on equal footing, and either gender could actually be the culprit or victim of violence and abuse.
Despite his stance on gender equality, Maier made the following basic assumptions on his Linear Aggression Sequence model: the man is the abuser; the woman is the abused; the children of the couple are also victims of abuse.
This model works on the notion that prior to abuse, there is typically a conflict. Each partner in the relationship realistically knows and understands that the other has a unique perspective on the matter at hand, and has certain rights. Unfortunately, the dominant of the two will work to undermine the opinions and rights of the other if they assume the role of an abuser.
As the conflict escalates, the person who assumes the role of the abuser will rise to a level of dominance. Many by nature, specifically men, are very competitive in nature. The male that has the disposition of the abuser may assume that the conflict is competitive based, and there should be a winner as well as a loser.
Abusive behavior commonly includes demeaning words and inappropriate actions that hurt or make the submissive partner ” usually the female partner ” ill at ease. In the long run, the dominant partners verbally abusive language, and aggressive physical and psychological behavior will effect the submissive partners emotional breakdown.
At the conclusion of the conflict, the dominant partner feels in control of the submissive partner and then begins to rationalize the abusive action or violence. The blame often gets passed on from the abuser to the victim, who, after being demoralized, concurs with the abuser that the violence was indeed called for.
Abusers usually get pacified when they feel that their victims have already admitted responsibility for the abuse or violence. Consequently, the appeased abusers cease to be violent and now engage in behavior that is charming and appropriate. This stage is short-lived however. Studies reveal that violent and abusive behavior is a recurring activity.
Other researchers have looked at various psychiatric dynamics in abusive relationships. Many studies and their findings are not widely accepted because of the myriad of factors that can be considered. Psychiatrists, doctors, and other mental health experts generally agree that the “Linear Aggression Sequence” is commonly found in abusive relationships.
