The idea of the subconscious mind was once an accepted part of psychoanalysis. However, it has since suffered a fall from popularity in academic and professional circles, due in part to its acceptance by psychics and new age healers who claim it as a pathway to unlocking psychic powers and gateways to higher consciousness.
The powers and abilities of the subconscious mind are unable to measured or tested in a laboratory. Since no two people are alike, no two minds, conscious or subconscious, will react the same to any given situation. This makes it difficult for the scientific community to accept the idea of the subconscious mind.
Your subconscious mind is a valuable, powerful tool that has been a part of humanity from our very earliest days. All over the world people from different cultures and religions recognize the existence of this state of mind, though they may call it by other names. It has been called instinct, intuition and the sixth sense. And it is something that you use every day, whether you are aware of it or not.
The Subconscious Mind
To answer this question, we fist have to ask, \”What is the conscious mind?\” Consciousness basically just means \”awareness.\” Therefore, the conscious mind is what a person\’s mind is actively aware of, the totality of their perceptions, thoughts, and feelings. On the other hand, when someone is \”unconscious,\” such as when they are asleep or anesthetized, they are unaware of their surroundings, perceptions, thoughts, feelings, etc.
The subconscious is the state of mind between being conscious and being unconscious. You are in a state where you are both able to access your conscious thoughts – such as some emotions, thoughts and perceptions of the surface mind – but are unable to access them fully. When you are in a subconscious state of mind you are underneath the surface layer of thought.
Our brains are constantly turned on, processing a large amount of information every second of every day. Much of this information we aren\’t even aware of! When you are working or concentrating on something your brain is still busy seeing, hearing and smelling, storing and processing this data without you even being aware of it. The relevant information is put in the front of the mind where we are easily able to access it, such as noticing when the phone rings or being aware of a sudden hunger pain.
Yet all that other information is still in our mind, constantly being processed by our brains on a level we are not consciously aware of, and we call this the subconscious mind.
The Power of Subconscious Mind
Our subconscious mind is always working, distilling the information it receives into impressions and feelings that our conscious, thinking mind isn\’t aware of. Sometimes, in extreme situations, these impressions may register so strongly on the conscious mind that we are aware of them, even if we can\’t explain them. Our ancestors called this instinct, and it was a necessary part of survival.
It is a common feeling that happens to everyone, that sensation of something not being right, of being just a little bit of, or of having a bad feeling about something without being able to explain why you feel so uneasy. Later you might look back and see that your feelings were right on the mark. This is a prime example of the powers of the subconscious mind. Without you being aware of it your mind picked up on small pieces of information your conscious mind overlooked and came to the conclusion that something was wrong. Your subconscious, aware of an unseen threat, did its best to try to warn you.
The instincts provided by our subconscious mind are a valuable survival trait. Unfortunately, today\’s society values thought, logic, evidence, and prove more highly than feelings, especially when those feelings can\’t be readily explained. The scientific community ridicules people who sense negative energy, who have premonitions of danger, or who claim to have a sixth sense. Consequently, the average person, fearing such ridicule, often ignores the \”irrational\” instincts of their subconscious mind-occasionally with tragic results.
The power of subconscious mind comes from trusting it. Try to be aware of your subconscious mind, be open to what it is trying to tell you, even if it seems illogical. Humanity has evolved a subconscious mind for a reason, and our instinct exists to help us survive.
